"Youth is Wasted on the Young"

As a woman 'of a certain age', I've gotten used to the occasional memory lapse. I'm usually pretty good with remembering faces, but often names evaporate from my memory banks at the very moment I am trying to call them up. As a secretary at a university, I am surrounded by a sea of young people every day and I find myself envying their vitality, energy, and sharp minds. Usually.

Let me explain. My 'office' at work is actually two separate work stations behind the main front counter in the waiting room section of our suite. On the right there is, among other things, a more public computer and the lost & found area. On the left is my personal work space which is more private.

One day last week, I was standing in the right section, adding an item to the lost & found, when a young lady came in and asked me if she could get a signature from her professor. I checked with her prof, then told her that he would be with her shortly, and would she please have a seat while waiting.

I then went back over to my personal desk and as I was working on my computer I could hear the girl chatting away very enthiastically on her cell phone. After about 10 minutes, she put her phone away, stood up and came over to the left side of the counter where I was working. She waved her arm toward the other section and said to me, "That woman over there told me my prof would sign this form. Is that true?"

I was so tempted to say, "That woman over there? Why, she doesn't know what she's talking about!"
I was somewhat startled that she couldn't remember me for 10 minutes, even though the two of us were the only ones in the room! Clearly, I'm going to have to work on my image...
